From July 1, 2020, New Zealand paid parental leave(22 weeks) will extend 4 more weeks.
Eligible employees will be entitled to 26 weeks of paid parental leave to take care of babies whose due date or birth date is after July 1, 2020.
Starting from July 1, 2020, the main caregivers (a small number of adoptive parents) will also be entitled to 26 weeks of paid parental leave to take care of children under the age of 6 under their custody. More paid parental leaves will bring more support to working families with new-borns and young children.
In addition, the “keep in touch day ” time has been extended
The contact day is for employees to work normally while getting paid parental leave from the government. Thus, while receiving paid parental leave, employees can work normally to ensure that they can slightly keep up with the work schedule when taking care of their children, and provide a basis for returning to work later, but there is a maximum working time limit. During the paid parental leave period, the maximum working hours is currently 52 hours.
From July 1, 2020, the keep-in-contact day will be raised from the previous 52 hours to 64 hours. That is, employees who receive paid parental leave can work up to 64 hours during the parental leave. This will not affect the eligibility for paid parental leave.
